I’m not going to spend this time using lame Friday the 13th puns and imagery. I mean, they’re sitting right there. But we’re better than that.

Or at least we want to be.

What isn’t scary at all is the prospect of another Friday night filled with football.

C.B. Aycock (5-2, 2-2 QC3A) at West Johnston (5-2, 3-1 QC3A)

The JoCo Sports Game of the Week finds us back in McGee’s Crossroads for a pivotal Quad County 3A tilt.

The Golden Falcons are a slim Massey Ratings favorite at -1.5 and have won both lifetime meetings between the schools, including a 29-21 win in Pikeville last season.

Tyion Washington carried the load at running back for what has been an inconsistent Wildcats offense in last week’s win over Smithfield-Selma with 183 rushing yards and a score. Gaining 190 team rushing yards should be the target for West in this one, since both of Aycock’s losses have come when allowing at least that many yards on the ground.

South Johnston (4-3, 2-2 QC3A) at Hunt (6-1, 4-0, QC3A)

Ever there was a time for a team to inject a bit of mystery and chaos into a conference race, it’s tonight for South Johnston.

They’re underdogs (-27.5 if you ask the computers), but if the Trojans could pull an upset in Wilson tonight, they would not only boost their own postseason chances, but lob a grenade into the Quad County 3A standings in the process.

It won’t be easy, but a turnover free game from the offense — combined with their usual opportunistic defense — would give them the proverbial puncher’s chance.

Smithfield-Selma (0-7, 0-4 QC 3A) at Southern Wayne (2-5, 0-4 QC 3A)

This is it for the Spartans. The witching hour is here (OK, I lied about the puns).

The Massey Ratings LOVE the Spartans this week, installing them as a 13.5-point favorite on the road. With Hunt and a resurgent East Wake to follow on the schedule, tonight is the best chance for a win for SSS.

Fingers crossed, lads.

Clayton (6-1, 4-0 GN 4A) at Corinth Holders 2-5, 1-3 GN 4A)

This is the 102.3 Game of the Week, and if you believe the computers (Clayton -34.5), it might not be pretty in Wendell.

But Corinth Holders usually plays the Comets a little tougher than expected, and the program is celebrating the first-ever junior varsity win, 24-0, on Thursday night.

Stranger things have happened, I’d say, but not lately.

Cleveland (7-0, 4-0 GN 4A) at Southeast Raleigh (3-4, 1-3 GN 4A)

Another Greater Neuse 4A game with a big Massey number (Cleveland -35.5) will go down in Raleigh tonight when the Rams visit the Bulldogs.

Southeast Raleigh is winless in three tries against Cleveland all time and have lost the last two meetings by a combined tally of 109-0.

Spring Creek (0-7, 0-2 Neuse Six) at Princeton (4-3, 1-1 Neuse Six)

Massey numbers don’t dip into the 40s all that often for league games, but the number here — Princeton -43.5 — is probably light.

The Gators are probably the worst public school team in this part of the state, and they’re going to be on the wrong end of a hiding tonight.

North Johnston (3-4, 1-1 Neuse Six) at Goldsboro (0-7, 0-2 Neuse Six)

North Johnston is a 23.5-point favorite tonight in Goldsboro against the winless Cougars, and the Panthers figure to get back on the left side of the ledger tonight in Neuse Six action.

Tougher challenges lie ahead in Eastern Wayne and Princeton, so getting out of this one healthy is key.
