Another week, another slate of games spread across Thursdays and Fridays. It’s not even unusual anymore, much like Clayton coming up large in big games. What do I mean? Read on:
Clayton 21, Hoggard 17
Clayton endured a lengthy lightning delay, and a game Hoggard squad, to move to 3-0 on Friday night. It was a win over a ranked foe, and a little payback for last year’s 38-14 Viking win down in Wilmington.
And the team’s official football X feed is killing it this year. Here’s a look at the final sequence that sent the Comets to 3-0.
Corinth Holders 13, South Garner 12
Felix Kihosa kicked four field goals for South Garner Thursday night, and in the dying embers of the fourth quarter, he stepped on the field to try number five.
Tanner Day had other ideas. The senior, who was lined up on the right end of the line, darted in, dove and blocked the would-be winning field goal to help the Pirates notch their first win of the season.
No other stats have been entered in MaxPreps.
Cleveland 36, Northern Nash 12
Owen Hulbert threw for 249 yards and three scores and added another on the ground as Cleveland improved to 3-0 with the win. Jamil Johnson hauled in eight of those passes for 100 yards and a pair of scores, while Markus Medley had 18 tackles, including five for loss, to pace the defense.
Rosewood 34, North Johnston 18
North Johnston’s ground game produced 233 yards and three scores, but the lack of a passing game (2-for-11, eight yards, two INT) and an efficient Rosewood offense proved too much on Thursday night.
Michael Mills, Juan Sanchez-Fuentes and Marquise Hicks all scored for the Panthers (1-2).
American Leadership Academy 39, North Wake Saints 28
Ronnie Cattalona threw for 101 yards and a score to compliment a rushing attack that piled up 446 yards and five scores as the Patriots leveled their record at 1-1.
Cam Thaxton rushed for 207 yards and three scores, while Howard Williams-Smith added 119 yards and the other two touchdowns for ALA.
Seaforth 70, Princeton 56
Remember when someone (me) suggested that the Princeton defense would be better than last year, sparking a boost to the Bulldog program? Well, about that.
Seaforth piled up 70 points and 645 yards in a 70-56 win Thursday night, despite the best efforts of Teo McPhatter (343 rushing yards, seven total touchdowns) and Taylor Parrish (134 yards, TD).
Princeton (1-2) hosts North Johnston on Sept. 11.
Harnett Central 54, Smithfield-Selma 14
Harnett Central roared out of the gate with a 27-point first quarter and never looked back in a comfortable win over the Spartans (0-3).
