Thanks to Hurricane Helene, we had three prep football games Monday night, resulting in a clean sweep for Johnston County squads.

Down to the wire

North Johnston finished up its nonconference slate at Lakewood, and found itself down 7-0 in the waning moments.

Kaleb Pone, who’s putting up quite the season, scored a rushing touchdown with about three minutes left (per MaxPreps), then added the game-winning two-point conversion for a stirring 8-7 victory.

Pone passed for 107 yards and added another 127 on the ground, while Seth Scott, Traquin Watson and Eli Willard all recorded nine tackles for a defense that didn’t allow the Leopards an offensive touchdown.

The Panthers (3-2) will open Neuse 6 play at Spring Creek on Friday night.

Down to the wire, part 2

After three quarters, Corinth Holders trailed Willow Spring, 13-3, and was staring down the barrel of an 0-2 start to Greater Neuse River 4A play.

Israel Daniel’s 80-yard touchdown run early in the final period started the rally, and Jaylon Holder’s two-yard touchdown plunge with 19 seconds left completed the comeback for the Pirates (4-1, 1-1 GNR 4A).

Coming off a loss at home to Richlands, Princeton was looking to right the ship against winless Clinton in its last non-league contest, and the Bulldogs did so in style with a 42-20 win over the Darkhorses.

Teo Mcphatter rushed for 241 yards and four scores while Austin Lewallen added 114 more yards and two additional touchdowns.

Princeton opens Neuse 6 play at home against Eastern Wayne this week.
