So, we learned a few things about our local Johnston County football teams last week — and I learned that you shouldn’t take your phone with you to the bathroom when that device is providing the internet for the broadcast you’re doing. Still, you can listen to the parts that I kept online here.
Cleveland didn’t have any such issues, powering past West Johnston, 47-0, in the JoCo Sports Game of the Week on its way to a 3-0 record.
Coming into the contest, I noted a lack of production in the running game by folks not named Jackson Byrd and speaking of the all-everything QB, his completion percentage was a little off of his normal lofty standards.
Check and check, I guess.
And I’m not sure if donut Monday is still a thing, but the Cleveland defense posted a shut out. So it might be fine dining over on Polenta Road this morning.
Oh, two more news items out of the Cleveland program. Former quarterback Skyler Locklear, now plying his trade at UTEP, recorded a rushing, passing and a receiving touchdown in an overtime loss to Southern Utah on Saturday in El Paso.
And after recording five tackles against West Johnston, Cameron Melvin somehow managed to get to Michigan for a noon kick Saturday. I need his travel agent.
Marching on
Speaking of lopsided games, Clayton hammered Wakefield, 51-6, on the strength of a stingy defense and a 42-point explosion in the first six minutes of the second quarter.
Clayton will be back in action Thursday night at home against Holly Springs — the Week 2 game that fell victim to severe weather.
guess who else is undefeated?
Corinth Holders is 3-0, and the latest triumph was a 41-17 win over previously unbeaten South Johnston. The Pirates recorded a safety, a pick-six to close out the first half and a punt return for a touchdown to push past the Trojans and put a bow on a fine first three games for head coach Carl Smith Jr.

Through its first three weeks as a NCHSAA member, American Leadership Academy is 3-0, having outscored its opposition, 162-0.

The Patriots visit 3-0 Roanoke Rapids this week.
close, but no cigar
Midway raced out to a 21-6 lead at the half and held off a North Johnston rally for a 29-22 victory. Kaleb Pone tallied 244 total yards and a score, Aamari Duntson added a rushing touchdown and Seth Scott and Eli Williard recovered fumbles for North in the contest.
The loss drops the Panthers to 1-2 on the campaign, and they’ll have a bye week before hosting Hobbton on Sept. 20.
