two at the top of the quad
With a 34-10 win over shorthanded South Johnston, C.B. Aycock improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Quad County 3A. The Falcons got 149 rushing yards and a couple of scores from Ricky Elliott and five receptions for 135 yards and two more scores from Zimere McClarin in the win.
They’re joined atop the conference standings by Fike, which took down Smithfield-Selma, 37-0.
In the hunt
Last year, a 13-7 loss to East Wake proved fatal for West Johnston’s playoff tiebreakers. If that scenario plays out again this fall, Friday’s 28-14 win will wind up being key.
The Wildcat defense stole the show, recording eight sacks (including four from Kaden Trotter), three fumble recoveries and an interception.
heading for a showdown?
Cleveland won its 48th consecutive regular-season game with a 44-21 win at Fuquay-Varina last week.
Speaking of streaks
Clayton improved to 6-0 for just the third time since 1990 with a 36-13 win at home against Southeast Raleigh.
Staying hot
Corinth Holders continues to outrun its preseason expectations — of perhaps the preseason expectations of others for them — with a 40-20 win at South Garner.
road warriors
North Johnston ran its road record to 3-0, its overall record to 4-2 and, most importantly, its Neuse 6 Conference record to 1-0 with a 36-0 win at Spring Creek.
Kaleb Pone continued his stellar junior season with 105 passing yards and a score to go along with 198 rushing yards and three more touchdowns. In addition, a dozen different Panther defenders recorded tackles en route to the shutout.
on the see-saw
Meanwhile, Princeton continued its alternating pattern of wins and losses with a 30-18 setback against Eastern Wayne.
The Bulldogs sit at 2-4 overall, but have a chance to build some momentum with visits to winless Goldsboro and Spring Creek the next two weeks.
building for the future
American Leadership Academy has no seniors, 10 juniors and one of the smallest enrollments of any NCHSAA school in this part of the state.
It also has a 5-1 record after a 36-6 win at Southside on Friday.
