On a night on which eight of the nine Johnston County high school football teams had games, one would expect at least a handful of them to come out victorious.
The out-of-county opposition had other plans, it seems. Seven of the local teams fell, while only Clayton prevailed. Cleveland took the week off, hopefully listening to the podcast.
Let’s dive in, shall we?

Since it’s Saturday morning, no one has updated their stats yet, so we’ll come back and update this later.
Edit: We have a little more information as I polish off my brunch on Sunday.
Clayton 56, Fuquay-Varina 10
The Comets weren’t kidding around in the Greater Neuse River 7A opener, were they?
The next Tweet pointed out that Clayton forced five turnovers, for a total of nine in the last two weeks. Clayton (4-1, 1-0) visits Smithfield-Selma (1-4, 0-1) next week.
South Garner 49, Smithfield-Selma 0
South Garner rushed for 303 yards and four scores to claim the Greater Neuse River 7A opener for both teams.
Smithfield-Selma fell to 1-4 overall, and hosts Clayton next week.
Harnett Central 28, South Johnston 24
Harnett Central ran back two kickoffs for touchdowns, according to Al Myatt of the Dunn Daily Record, and held off South Johnston in the Carolina Pines 6A opener for both teams.
Mason Weaver had 11 tackles to lead South Johnston (2-2, 0-1).
Union Pines 38, West Johnston 6
Ian Hicks passes for 204 yards and a score as Union Pines claimed a victory in the Carolina Pines 6A lid lifter for both squads.
Case Holland connected with Gavin Roberts for the Wildcats’ (1-3) lone score.
Eastern Wayne 32, North Johnston 20
Kaleb Pone passed for 197 yards and a couple of scores while adding a third rushing touchdown as North Johnston fell to 3-2 overall, and 0-1 in Three Rivers 4A play against Eastern Wayne.
I’d quote a few stats from MaxPreps for the Warriors, but they look very much like jibberish.
Midway 73, Princeton 50
A 14-0 lead for Princeton after the first quarter evaporated in a hail of Raider points, as Midway put up a staggering 67 of them in the second and third quarters to claim a wild win in the Swine Valley 2A/3A opener.
Midway’s Tanner Williams passed for 183 yards and two scores while rushing for 277 yards and four more touchdowns to pace the Raiders (4-1).
Princeton’s Teo McPhatter continued his ridiculous start to the season with 398 rushing yards and five scores for the shorthanded Bulldogs (3-2).
East Carteret 41, American Leadership Academy 21
Myes Shelton rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns to power the Mariners to their first win of the season.
Anthony Jimenez rushed for 139 yards and a score, while Ian Wands passed for 162 yards and a touchdown to Kamarri Smallwood for the Patriots (3-2).
Rolesville 53, Corinth Holders 0
Kaleb Williams was 13-of-16 for 363 yards passing as Rolesville dropped Corinth Holders, 53-0, in the Cap 8A opener for both squads.
The Pirates (2-2) visit Broughton this week.
