Week 3 is in the books for our Johnston County high school football teams, and it was a mixed bag of results.

The positive? Cleveland, North Johnston and American Leadership Academy moved to 3-0, while Princeton and Corinth Holders bounced back from Week 2 losses to move to 2-1.

The not-so-postive? Smithfield-Selma scored its first offensive points of the season, but dropped a heartbreaker, while Clayton went on the road and ran into a solid-looking Hoggard squad.

The neutral? West and South Johnston took the week off and hopefully listened to the podcast. OK, I made that last bit up.

Let’s go a little deeper:

Harnett Central 30, Smithfield-Selma 28

Johnavon Cox passed for 241 yards and four touchdowns, the last of which went to Davion Hurst with just under four minutes to go. The Spartans’ two-point pass attempt fell to the turf, however, and the Trojans (2-1) managed to run out the clock.

Noah Jeter, Jamie Groves and James Bell also had touchdown grabs for Smithfield-Selma (0-3), which can take the silver lining of finding a bit of offense away from this one.

Hoggard 38, Clayton 14

The Vikings (3-0) raced to a 17-0 lead and never looked back in an impressive win against Clayton (2-1).

Hoggard’s Matthew Boring was anything but, going 11-for-12 for 169 yards and a score.

American Leadership Academy 26, Fairmont 16

For the second week in a row, the Patriots (3-0) erased a halftime deficit (16-12) and grabbed the win with a pair of second-half touchdowns.

Ian Wands was 16-of-21 for 202 yards and a couple of scores, while Anthony Jimenez continued the hot start to his senior season with 162 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Elijah Fulton led the defense with 11 tackles for ALA, which hosts Wake Prep next week at 4 p.m. (still waiting on those lights, I guess).

Cleveland 52, Northern Nash 28

Cleveland had a 17-14 halftime lead over Northern Nash before accelerating away with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Owen Hulbert threw for 236 yards and four scores, Kaleb Ferrell rushed for 108 yards and another score and Krisjon Clark, Porter Bennett and Wyatt Caldwell (2) added touchdown receptions.

On defense, Daniel Lugo (nine), Noah Williamson (eight), Jaylen King (seven) and Diondre Haynes (seven) led the tackle brigade.

Princeton 50, seaforth 34

Princeton held a narrow 14-13 halftime lead before exploding for 36 second-half points to improve to 2-1.

Teo McPhatter makes me want to rewrite my lead, since he rushed for 385 yards and six touchdowns while Austin Lewallen added 101 yards and a score.

Mercy.

Corinth Holders 31, Titans 14

Corinth Holders managed only a first-half field goal against South Garner before scoring three fourth-quarter touchdowns to move to 2-1 on the campaign.

Jackson Poole and Gavin Corker recorded interceptions, Jordan Ashworth tallied 12 tackles and Blake Beckwith had 71 rushing yards and a score for the Pirates.

North Johnston 45, Rosewood 6

North Johnston got 257 total yards and four touchdowns from Kaleb Pone in a runaway win at Rosewood.

Charlie Barnes and Eli Williard added rushing scores while Caden Bailey caught Pone’s touchdown pass.

Williard and Joshua Leonard had seven tackles apiece, and Williard topped off his night with a couple of sacks.
