As March Madness plays out in gyms across the fruited plain, Johnston County softball teams have gotten into conference play.

It’s not quite “mad” yet, but it’s percolating.

Here’s a look at how the teams are faring:

Greater Neuse River 4A

Cleveland is off to a 3-0 start in league play, keeping pace with Willow Spring, Clayton and Corinth Holders were both perfect in nonconference action, and will be looking to close the gap.

Quad County 3A

West Johnston failed to record a win in nonleague action, but has done nothing but that in Quad County 3A play. South Johnston is equally spotless, and those two schools won’t meet until April 1 in McGee’s Crossroads.

Neuse 6

The Neuse 6 slate is just underway, and the margins are still pretty fine. North Johnston edged Spring Creek, 3-2, in the league opener while Princeton lost a 2-1 nailbiter against Eastern Wayne.

Still a long way to go here.

The Patriots are playing their last spring as a NCHSAA independent, and are 3-5 so far this season.
