Clayton and Cleveland kept perfect seasons intact with comfortable Week 6 victories while West Johnston notched a much-needed Carolina Pines 6A victory.

For all that and more, let’s press on:

Clayton 55, Smithfield-Selma 7 — Clayton rolled to its sixth straight win to start the season with an easy win against Smithfield-Selma. The Comets (6-0, 2-0 GNR) held the Spartans (0-6, 0-2) to minus 13 yards rushing, and all of the points in this game came in the opening two quarters.

Thanks to Scott Chadwick’s excellent game notes, we know that Terris Hobbs rushed for 157 yards and five touchdowns on a paltry 10 carries while Damacio Cueto was 12-of-17 for 180 yards and two total touchdowns.

Ta’Shaun Walker had quite a night on defense as well, with four tackles, a tackle for loss, a blocked punt and a pass broken up.

Cleveland 42, South Garner 0 — Cleveland’s defense posted a shutout to power the Rams to a 5-0 record, and a 1-0 start in the Greater Neuse River 7A.

Owen Hulbert went 11-of-15 for 154 yards and a score, while Kaleb Ferrell added 101 yards and three touchdowns for Cleveland.

Broughton 39, Corinth Holders 35 — Everett Borden threw for 425 yards and five touchdowns for Broughton, and the Capitals needed every bit of it to fight off Corinth Holders.

Hampton Gibbs threw for 168 yards and two scores, while Shamar Powell rushed for 110 yards and a score for the Pirates, who fell to 1-4 overall, and 0-2 in Cap 8A play.

North Pitt 26, North Johnston 14 — Zion Whitfield had a fourth-quarter rushing score, but it wasn’t enough to keep North Johnston from falling to 1-5 overall, and 0-2 in Three Rivers 4A play.

Not much on this one in MaxPreps, but there was some TV coverage.

West Johnston 31, Lee County 24 — The Wildcats exploded for 31 points on the back of 221 rushing yards and a couple of scores from Ashton Tennessee. Brandon Hicks and Gavin Bullock added rushing touchdowns for West Johnston, which improved to 2-3 and 1-1 in league play.

The defense forced five turnovers against Lee County, which fell to 0-5.

And our friend Benjamin Ormond got in touch to let us know just how well the Wildcat offense played.

Princeton 64, Wake Prep 0 — Princeton built a 50-0 lead at intermission en route to a romp on the road against Wake Prep (4-2).

The Bulldogs (3-3) didn’t throw a pass while piling up 522 yards on the ground. Teo McPhatter (256 yards, 4 TD) and Taylor Parrish (186 yards, 2 TD) led the attack. The much-maligned defense forced five turnovers en route to its first shutout since Oct. 10 of last year against Spring Creek — which is who Wake Prep replaced on this year’s schedule.

Union Pines 49, South Johnston 15 — The Vikings tallied seven first-half touchdowns en route to a 49-15 rout of South Johnston.

Vida Blue tossed a pair of touchdown passes for Union Pines (4-1, 2-0 CP 6A) while Adrian Colon rushed for 97 yards and four scores.

Caden Stack rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans, who fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Wayne Christian 48, American Leadership Academy 0 — Five Patriot turnovers and a punishing Wayne Christian ground attack lead to a lopsided defeat for ALA (1-4, 0-1 QC).

Cam Thaxton rushed for 119 yards for the Patriots on the night.
