Two Johnston County softball teams and one from the baseball ranks have reached the final four of their respective classifications.

Unfortunately for JoCo partisans, all three dropped Game 1 of a best-of-three series on Tuesday.

3A Softball

Scotland 7, South Johnston 2

LAURINBURG — Scotland County won its 27th straight game Tuesday with a five-run win over South Johnston in Game 1 of the NCHSAA 3A Softball Eastern Regionals.

Reese Penny plated both Trojan runs with a home run, but South (23-2) was undone by five errors in the contest.

Game 3 is set for Thursday night at South Johnston.

4A Softball

Conley 4, Cleveland 2

CLAYTON — Conley scored single runs in the fifth and seventh to hold off the Rams in Game 1 of the 4A Eastern Softball Regional.

Cleveland (20-4) will look to force a decisive Game 3 on Thursday night in Greenville.

4A Baseball

Laney 6, Corinth Holders 3

WILMINGTON — Laney’s TJ Ziermann fanned 10 in 6.1 innings of work and added a two-run homer to power the Bucs past Corinth Holders in Game 1 of the NCHSAA 4A Baseball Eastern Regionals.

The Pirates (25-4) will likely send LSU signee Briggs McKenzie to the mound Thursday night in Game 2.
