Spring sports are coming to a close this week, and for the tennis folks, it’s already playoff time.

Let’s dive in:

BOYS TENNIS

A few Johnston County squads have made the postseason, and the first round gets underway this week.

The 3A bracket features an all-Johnston County matchup between West Johnston and South Johnston. The two teams split a pair of meetings, with South winning the first 6-3 before West reversed that scoreline last week.

Baseball

It’s the last week for baseball and softball seasons. Let’s see where we are:

Greater Neuse River 4A

Corinth Holders has a two-game lead with three to go (Clayton x2 and Willow Spring). Willow Spring plays Fuquay-Varina twice, sandwiched around a game with Cleveland, before facing the Pirates in the regular-season finale on May 3.

Corinth Holders can clinch at least a share of the title with two wins, or one win and any Willow Spring loss. The Pirates will be looking to make sure that last game doesn’t mean very much, while Clayton is very much in the mix for second or third.

Quad County 3A

South and West are neck-and-neck for the Quad County 3A crown, with Hunt still in the mix as well. West Johnston has a game in hand, which is at home against Fike today. Then, it’s Southern Wayne on Tuesday and the season finale at South Johnston on Thursday.

South holds the tiebreaker edge, thanks to a 3-0 win back on April 1, but has to play at third-place Hunt on Tuesday before the game against West.

The phrase “all to play for” comes to mind.

Neuse 6

Princeton won, 3-2, at North Johnston on April 1, and that’s the only difference in the Neuse 6 title race at the moment. With games against the bottom part of the league (North/EW and Princeton/Beddingfield) early in the week, the stage is set for the league decider Thursday night in Princeton.

Carolina 1A

Rosewood edged North Duplin for the Carolina 1A regular-season crown.

Greater Neuse River 4A

Cleveland strolled to the Greater Neuse River 4A crown, so the real battle is for second through fourth between Garner, Corinth Holders, Fuquay-Varina and Clayton.

Quad County 3A

South Johnston is very close to clinching the Quad County crown, needing only a combination of one win or one West Johnston loss to do so.

Those two teams meet on Thursday in a game that might mean nothing — or everything.

Neuse 6

North Johnston controls its own fate with a one-game lead, and a game against second-place Eastern Wayne on Tuesday is for most of the marbles. North already owns a win over the Warriors this season, back on March 27.
